NGFS Plenary members unanimously approved the appointment, which was made at the recommendation of the Steering Committee.

As president of De Nederlandsche Bank, Olaf Sleijpen is also a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, a member of the Systemic Risk Board and a Governor at the International Monetary Fund. He has been a Professor of European Economic Policy at the Maastricht School of Business and Economics since 2007.

Olaf Sleijpen will replace Sabine Mauderer, first deputy governor of the Deutsche Bundesbank, who has been part of the NGFS leadership team for four and a half years, including two-and-a-half years as Chair of the NGFS following two years as vice chair. Under Sabine Mauderer’s leadership, the NGFS has grown to 152 members to become a truly global network and has made significant progress in better understanding and integrating climate, adaptation and nature considerations in financial risk management, in the face of geopolitical and economic upheaval.

Reflecting on her time as Chair, Sabine Mauderer said:

“It has been a great privilege to serve the NGFS and work with such dedicated colleagues from around the world. Together, we have strengthened our network's role in helping central banks and supervisors better understand and address climate- and nature-related financial risks. As these risks become increasingly material, it remains essential to continue our evidence-based analytical agenda that equips central banks and supervisors with the data, tools, and frameworks needed to act within their mandates. I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to my Co-Chair Fundi Tshazibana and the NGFS Secretariat for their outstanding support and close cooperation throughout. I am grateful for the spirit of truly global cooperation that has driven this progress, especially during a period marked by significant geopolitical and economic challenges. I am truly happy to hand over to Olaf Sleijpen, who I know will bring the NGFS to new heights.”

Olaf Sleijpen said:

“Climate and nature risks are increasingly shaping financial and monetary stability. The key challenge is to translate this into how we assess and manage related macro-critical and micro prudential risks. The NGFS plays an important and global role in supporting that effort and helping central banks and supervisors incorporate these risks as part of their mandates. I look forward to building on recent progress and strengthening our mutual cooperation.”
