Overview

Data scarcity and inconsistency are substantial obstacles to the development of analytical work on climate risk. With two key Reports on bridging data gaps (progress report in 2021 and final report in 2022), the NGFS provided non-binding policy recommendations to improve the availability, quality and comparability of climate-related data. It drew evidence-based conclusions on the main data gaps and the key challenges to closing those gaps. The NGFS also built a first data directory, to systematically map climate-related data gaps. The tool is public and aims at improving data availability, but also at highlighting new metrics and methodologies and helping establish comparable and consistent data.

The NGFS has created the Expert Network on Data in 2022 to foster regular dialogue within the NGFS community of statisticians and data scientists, to sharpen their expertise on climate and nature data-related topics and contribute to collective capacity. As such, the Expert Network helps disseminate information and good practices related to building, managing and/or exploiting such data.

The Expert Network on Data has structured its work around three key areas:

  • First, the Expert Network organises regular webinars for NGFS members and observers, as well as external experts, to present relevant data work within the Membership;
  • Second, the Expert Network conducts projects on specific topics of interest (current areas of work include improving data on physical risks, exploring nature-related data and leveraging the use of technology);
  • Finally, the Expert Network supports the project team working on the new NGFS Data Directory.
